The idea of God being with us, as us, in that first Christmas not only meant we could know God, but we could know ourselves. Here was the word that explained us and healed us. In Jesus, God set himself so low in the world that anyone could reach him as God with us (Immanuel). Not God against us, unknown to us, or distant from us.
