Archbishop’s Mandate
We have been asked to elect two representatives and one alternative (substitute) rep for the next sitting of our Melbourne Anglican Synod (the parliament of our church).
Below are:
- The Archbishop’s Mandate
- The nomination forms
- An introduction to Synod
- The Synod Act
The nomination forms need to be completed and given to our vicar (Mike Flynn) by Sunday 12/4. The election or appointment will be held at St. John’s 10 am service on Sunday 19/4.
What time commitment is required?
Synod reps are elected for a three year period. The annual Synod meeting is normally held in early to mid-October and includes a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening (normally 7 to 10 pm) as well as most of the daylight hours of the Saturday (normally 10 am to 5pm). There is always pre-reading to do as the annual reports, budget papers and motions/Acts that will be discussed at Synod will be sent out in the weeks prior to the meeting. This can amount to around five hundred pages of reading material but is often less. During Synod there are daily updates to the order and content of the business papers to keep up with. As a Syond rep you can also stand to be elected to various committees or join voting socieities, such as the New Cranmer society, which involve seperate meetings and communications.
When is Synod in 2026?
Synod will be held from 7th to 10th of October in 2026. For this year it will be in person only, with no online sessions available except for those with disabilities. The reason for this is to allow members of Synod the opportunity to interact in person with our new Archbishop, Ric Thorpe.
Do I need to be able to use digital technology?
Yes. It is now essential that you are able to use digital technology as all publications are now sent electronically. Synod sessions, pre-meetings and sub-committee meetings can now be done by video conferencing and all voting is by electronic means.
