“The prayer made in faith will heal the sick person…” according to James 5:15. The context of this verse is being patient in enduring suffering while waiting for the final healing Jesus will bring when he returns to judge the world (7-9). James even holds up to us the prophets and Job as models of what faith that endures suffering with reverence looks like. At the same time, James commands us to seek prayers for healing (14-15) and he wants us to understand that prayer is powerful (16-18) knowing any healing we receive is only made possible by the forgiveness and resurrection of Christ (15). So, there is a now and not yet in our prayers for healing. As we pray, we will know healing in this life, but it will be in part, or for a time, or at levels we did not expect – such as the healing of relationships during a time of illness. The point is, any healing now is only a glimpse of the future. We still must endure and mature through our suffering, but we can also pray for wisdom (1:2,5) to know how to mature and for healing in whatever way God chooses to give us. We do this knowing that every prayer for healing will be fully and finally answered when Jesus, the judge and healer, returns.
