I admit, church is weird for those of us who were not raised in it, but now some wonder – why are these people still standing at their posts? Why are the churches growing? After the acids of biblical criticism in the mid-twentieth century, the imaginary straw men of Christianity that the new atheists burnt to the ground in the nineties, the ongoing denigration of Christianity by some leaders and media, and the past apathy of many Aussies, there seems to be a suspicion that we’ve too carelessly let go of something important. Is it too bold to say there seems to be an ache? A realisation that even in the imperfect following of Christianity of the past, it grounded us? Prayer mattered. God mattered. We mattered as a result. That is why we are starting a series called “Reasons for God,” which is our attempt to address some of the questions people have about Christianity and give them space to test and doubt whatever they need to. Sundays 10 am and 5 pm. (Mike Flynn – vicar)
