Oscar Wilde famously said: “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yeild to it… I can resist anything except temptation.” Which is witty for trivial things but catastrophic for significant or dangerous temptations. One point of Jesus’ temptations is trivial things we feel we can give into without much consequence, are breaking the back of significant principles about how our lives work. The question our temptations ask is will we use our power, freedom, value and importance; even our pursuit of goodness or faith to serve ourselves or God?
