In Jesus’ first major teaching moment, he addresses the broken and desperate to tell them what it means to be blessed. The blessed are not necessarily happy or successful but they are the people we need and the people that God owns as his own. He says the kingdom of heaven is for those who know they don’t deserve it, that comfort is for those who are grieved by what grieves God, that power is reserved for the humble, the experience of God for those who love justice born in mercy, the vision of God for those who use every good thing they know to lead them to him, that peace is for troubled peacemakers and acceptance for wronged whistleblowers.
