That God tests our hearts is a biblical theme. If the rationale for the test is to show us what is in our hearts, then this is a challenge to our time which has made following our hearts the core of who we are. In Numbers 20 we find even Moses is tested and struggles and we are reminded again about how the biblical record is ruthlessly honest about the failures of all its heroes. Yet, somehow, these stories are more precious to us because the people in them, like us, are fallible. Like us, they are searching for a hero in their lives, their struggles teach them it cannot be themselves or the confused truth in their hearts.
