Augustine of Hippo pointed out that if God is love (as we often remind ourselves) then he must have known love within himself before he created. He has loved the other within himself from eternity – as Jesus describes in his prayer in John 17. For Christians, God is more complex than we often want him to be. He is not the cold and simply unity we see in other conceptions about God. No, God relates and always has.
